I live in TX and have for years.  I went to high school mostly on Tx & my partner's education was basicly all in tx. School shootings have always been a worry and a reality. Thankfully I never had to be in a active shooter situation myself but we did have bomb threats in high school. They sent us out in the football field while they swept the school. I remember joking with my friends that if we did get bombed at least we were close enough to the probably blast area that we would die first & have a relatively quick death.

I was numb to the recent elementary school shooting at first but as I read more details about it the more emotional I get. This post about a Dad who is standing as an unarmed guard over his kid's school, which is also his wife's work finally made my cry.

At this point I'm trying not to doomscroll or overwhelm myself. Time for some distraction till I can grieve & look for actionable things to do. Suggestions welcome, please note due to covid & personal concerns in person work is not an option for me rn.

Do you do any drawing? Maybe you can find something to read? I got a bunch of manga titles I can toss your direction that were not made exclusively for teens if that's your thing.

Ooo, let me give you some then, starting with a classic. I'm going to avoid ones that were adapted into anime (if you do want that, then To Your Eternity and Spy x Family are like right there and excellent at what they do):

>20th Century Boys: 20-something year old with nothing going for him finds out a chain of terrorist acts are happening and slowly realizes it resembles a book of prophecies he wrote with his friends when they were kids. They try to figure out who is responsible for what's happening and how to stop it.

>Dungeon Meshi: A party of adventurers fight a dragon, they lose horribly and their cleric sacrifices herself to save the party. The group lose all their equipment and must get back down there as quickly as possible so decide to backtrack and survive by learning to eat the monsters in the dungeon.

>Tondemo Skill de Isekai Hourou Meshi: guy ends up in fantasy world, has a special skill that gives him access to Amazon while there, ends up getting forced into recruiting a powerful boss monster, spends a lot of time traveling and making food. It's cozy and funny.

Saihate no Paladin: child is raised in the city of the dead by 3 undead and eventually learns how become a strong boy along the way. It's not the most original premise, but it offers very well-rounded characters and covers the ideas of loss, love, and faith.

>Sousou no Frieren: The party of heroes defeat the demon lord and return home. The story is about what happens 40 years later when the hero passes away and the spellcaster, an elf, travels across the land and learns what some consider useless spells.

>Tengoku Daimakyou: It's set in the future where a group of children with talents are kept in a secret base to grow and be monitored. It's also about a boy and a girl in a postapocalyptic "The Road"-esque Japan tasked with "finding Heaven."

Hopefully this should give you something but if it's not enough I can bring up a lot more.

Forgot to add: you can find these by going to mangadex.org.
