 I had such a bad brain day yesterday. I didn't want to do anything even thought it was my day off & I was trying to spend time with J. We spent 3 hours doing bleh stuff while I failed to pick something to do. I'm stuck at work so I thought I would make an 'I did' list.

I did
  • Block my friends hat & got her address. Now I just have to mail it.
  • Made breakfast, lunch & dinner for both days off. Even if it was cereal it counts.
  • Watched 2 episodes of Gotham with J. (We are in Season 3. J and I both just want Penguin & Nygma to kiss already! Like Penguin said This is Gotham. no one cares!)
  • Washed the crockpot.
  • Did laundry. Thankfully it was sunny, if cold, so everything on the clothesline dried except 1 towel.
  • Was polite to my mom when she asked me what she could get us for christmas & then refused my gift ideas, because she wanted to 'give us something we need', not something we want like a game *grumble grumble* Does fun gifts end at adulthood or is this just my mother?
  • I got to work on time & without incident.
Ok that was nice to get it listed out. The list isn't as long as I would like but thats ok. Now i'm going to try to nap and get some more spoons.

Why is it that I am so bad at shopping & forgetting things?
Ironically most of the things I forgot are holiday or winter related. I forgot to get more tea which makes me very sad. The closer stores really don't have a good tea selection at all. J is about to be out of his peppermint tea too.
The store didn't have Hanukkah candles, but that was a bit of a long shot. I'll have to order some online. I may get some tea that way too. I haven't ordered tea online before but I'm sure it will be fine. *knocks on wood

We are stocked up on crackers, medicine, and we have leftover chicken soup and beef stew. What do you like to stock up on for the holidays ?

 If you missed the  Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade and want to watch the Broadway performances, Vox has them all here

The cast of SpongeBob performed "Best Day Ever;" the cast of Dear Evan Hansen performed "You Will Be Found;" the cast of Anastasia performed a mashup of "Journey to the Past" and "Once upon a December;" and the cast of Once on This Island performed "Why We Tell the Story"  Also the Radio City Rockettes performance is here too.

The SpongeBob costumes are great, and the song is better then I expected. I really want to see the set and full costumes for this one. Anastasia broke my heart, as is usual for that movie.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Here is a short piece I wrote today while thinking about Hurricane Harvey and its effects. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Tragedy has a way of revealing people's inner truth.

Some people help without hesitation, rolling out trucks of food, supplies and hope. They serve meals and organize shelters. They open their stores and businesses and offer the help they can. The help you would have paid full price for last week. Before the storm.

Other people say 'our thoughts and prayers are with you'. Empty buildings the size of a stadium that echo with empty words, are only filled after public shaming spurs them into action. Vulnerable are left without explanation or guidance by the agencies that should have taken care of them. They were not taken care of before the storm.

Troops in uniforms are sent out leaving behind worried spouses and children just starting a new school year. Deployed to a disaster zone only a few hours from their home base. My hope is that they are there to help and not to do the harm on orders from our commander in chief. Some may go willingly, glad to help their country in a time of need. They were training and working hopefully for the this, before the storm.

We remain here, safely inland, waiting. The storm is not over, the tolls count ever upwards. Soon we will see prices soar, of gas and energy and other things not yet known. Soon we will see how our President will react. If he will step up as others have done, or step aside as we wish him to. He may do has he has done thus far, standing in the way of helpers, tearing down protections and telling lies. The same thing he did before the storm.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I am not too far from the worst part of Harvey's devastation, only a few hours drive away. We got rain and winds but soon our area will be a shelter for many affected by the storm. Please donate wisely, if you can. Money and blood are what people need most at this point and it is harder to get donations to the affected areas.
Indivisible has a guide on how to give and how to advocate for help from our countries leaders. NPR has a detailed list of who you can give too. Please be sure to give responsibly so that your money will go to those in need.
Some places helping with relief efforts include local grocery store chain HEB, and many other local businesses and individuals.
You may or may not have heard of the Joel Osteen scandal. He runs a mega church out of a former stadium. They claimed to be inaccessible and asked people to seek shelter elsewhere. They later opened as a shelter after extreme protest from the community.
Meanwhile local Mosques are opening their doors to people who may hate them, without being asked. :)
Hurricane Harvey isn't over yet. Keep us in your thoughts and actions, now and in the months ahead. We're going to need it.
 Despite plans falling through, my birthday weekend went well. called my parents and my grandparents. I got my birthday money fine. It had been a hassle to walk my parents though using online services in previous years, so that is quite nice.
I made a white cake from scratch. J iced it with chocolate icing & I served it with ice cream. It turned out a bit dense, but still good. This is better then my last cake, so i count it as a win. I didn't cream the butter and sugar long enough. But it is still tasty.
In the mail, we got two coupons for a free pizza. Apparently when they are late, they will send you a coupon later. So i was pleasantly surprised. J and I caught up on the current season of Dr. Who. I love Bill and the finale gave us both Bill feels. We both love Capaldi and don't really want to see him go.
I got laundry done on the weekend, including the bottom sheet. I just need to do towels now. I also need to restring the clothing line with new string. The longer line broke so i only had the short one to dry on. Luckily it is hot as heck, so everything dried quick. I also got the grocery shopping done. Now I just need to make tomato sauce for pasta later. And I have a new soup recipe to try later this week.
 I feel the exhaustion weighing upon me, upon us. Heavy but invisible, like the pressure of an incoming storm.
Most walk by never noticing it, wondering at us who lie on the ground, pushed down by the pressure of life.
Some stare and ask why we are just lying there when we could be getting work done. Others simply walk by, and step over us, willfully unseeing.
Some stop and crouch down to offer what help they can, before they have to be on their way. A precious few sit beside us, offering kind words.
They help to gather all us prone together. We weary ones, gather together and try to help each other.
The ones who are now standing but who are stained with the marks of the ground look with sympathy and empathy. They nudge help towards us and wait for us to take it.
But you alone, must open your hands, grasp the helpful crutch and stand.
 Happy Memorial day for my fellow US people. My thanks go out to all who have served and sacrificed their lives in service.
For anyone interested in the difference between Memorial Day and Veterans Day in the US, I found this article from Washington Post. It is clear and includes some history of the holidays.
